VINNIE’S CEO SLEEP OUT
On Thursday 17th June, up to 120 Canberran business, government and community leaders slept out in the cold with just three pieces of cardboard, a sleeping bag, a cup of soup and a bread roll, to experience what it is like to be homeless for one night. Unlike the CEO sleep-outs held on the same night across the nation, CEO’s from Canberra were sleeping in the coldest conditions with temperatures averaging 2.0°C. There were also be the highest number of female CEO’s participating than anywhere else. This event represented an unprecedented opportunity to chart the experiences of some of our most influential and high profile leaders as they put themselves out of their comfort zone to raise awareness and much needed funds for the vicious cycle of homelessness.
David Nelson from Supa IGA Karabah was again working for the community on Tuesday morning 8th June 2010. Delivering a nutritious breakfast for the students of Queanbeyan public school. Queanbeyan Landcare has its origins in the Trees for Queanbeyan Committee which started in 1991 and incorporated as a Landcare Group in 1997. Membership is now about 40 residents. In the early years, the emphasis was on establishing neighbourhood plantings and this was a success, with about 20 sites thriving with more than 4,000 trees planted. In recent years, activities has widened to more than 12 projects. In addition, Queanbeyan Landcare participates in regional Landcare networks and contributes to local planning processes, such as the Queanbeyan City Council annual Management Plan.
Importantly, we work with other community groups, to achieve community facilities such as new bikeways along the Queanbeyan River, the Community Gardens in Henderson Road, the outdoor classroom in Thorpe Avenue on the Queanbeyan River. Landcare has attracted more than $124,000 in grants over the years to benefit the local community.
Landcare program can be heard on Sundays at 8am
